How to Calculate Cookout Food
Cookouts are counted per item, not per pound:
- Two sandwiches per adult, 1.5 per kid — the planning standard for a burgers-and-dogs menu.
- Split 60/40 burgers to dogs unless you know your crowd skews otherwise.
- Convert: 4 quarter-pound patties per pound of beef; buns rounded up to 8-packs; cheese for 75% of patties.
- Adjust ±20–25% for sides — a table full of salads genuinely reduces meat consumption.
Cookout formulas
Items = (adults × 2 + kids × 1.5) × appetite
Beef lb = patties ÷ 4 · Bun packs = ceil(count ÷ 8)
Worked example — 20 adults + 5 kids, average: 47.5 items → 29 patties (8 lb beef), 19 dogs, 4 packs of burger buns, 3 of dog buns, 22 cheese slices.

Tips Before You Grill
- 80/20 chuck for burgers — lean beef turns to hockey pucks over charcoal. Salt just before grilling, not in the mix.
- Make patties bigger than the bun — they shrink ~20% on the grill.
- Grill in waves, hold in a cooler. Wrapped in foil inside a dry cooler, cooked burgers hold safely hot for an hour.
- The 90°F rule: in summer heat, food gets one hour out — keep cold sides on ice and rotate small bowls instead of one big one.
- Veggie option: one plant-based patty per 10 guests covers you; grill them first on the clean grate.
